The double-deck stock cars traveled west loaded with pigs from points in Nebraska and Kansas for Clogherty Packing in LA on the CLS symbol (California LiveStock). The CLS went west as part of the afternoon fleet that included the OMN, VAN, OMW, BAV and ARRO at that time. It appears you are at the west end of Hermosa and from the sunlight it is morning, whereby these cars are returning empty. The presence of the "double-bar" unit is unusual as the cars generally came east on symbol CN, that would often have had Centennials. The dual cab signal equipped SDs were almost exclusively used in single unit local freight service (Rock Springs, Rawlins, Laramie, Sidney - for example) where the locals made short turnarounds and thus ran backwards. To comply with cab signal rules, they had to have a pickup on each end. UP 3202
COLORES WY Oct 19 1977 -- Union Pacific SD40-2 3202 and U-30C 2880 haul a live animal train across the plains east of Laramie. If memory serves me correct the cars were loaded with pigs. EMD built the 3202 (b/n 5819-30) in August 1972. This is one of ten units with "cab signals and Automatic Cab Signal equipment at each end for either-end-leading operation along Union Pacifics lines in Nebraska, Wyoming, and along the Columbia River."
