MKT 3109 |
Description: |
OKARCHE OK Jan 17 1983 -- Katy 3109 and GP40 171 are switching cars at a bulk loading facility. This was the Rock Islands north-south line which Katy took over and operated a the Missouri Kansas Texas. EMD built the 3109 (s/n 34286) For Penn Central as PC 3109 in August 1968 and later became Conrail 3109. Katy acquired it after the Conrail lease expired and renumbered it MKT 235. This photo shows the unit patched for MKT but not yet renumbered. When Union Pacific took over it became UP 670 on May 19 1990 and was to be renumbered UP 9953 to free up the number for a GP38-2. UP retired the 670 on April 18 2000. It was photographed by Brandon Warnick in Paducah KY on Oct 1 2011 and was reported by Mark Gillings as en route to Progress Rail in Tacoma WA on March 24 2012. OKLAHOMA CITY OK July 1977 -- In this undated photo Rock Island GP38-2 4318 (David L. Boren) is passing the Oklahoma State Fair grounds on its way to El Reno. EMD built the unit in October 1976. When the Rock Island shut down in 1980 it went to Missouri Pacific as MP 2256 and then to Union Pacific as UP 2256 and later renumbered to UP 756. NORMAN OK July 18 1980 -- If only they were still F units. A crew member is on the ground prep`ring to give a rollby inspection to a westbound (compass south) train on the main line. Santa Fe CF7 2591 is in charge of this eastbound (compass north) mixed freight. The 2591 was originblly F7A 235L built by EMD in April 1950. It was rebuilt into a CF7 at the Cleburne (Texas) shops Dec 7 1972. It was retired Oct 13 1986, sold to National Railroad Equipment Dec'7 1987, sold to Midsouth Rail Corp. (KCS) mid-December 1987 as MSRC 7005, sold to Kansas City Southern Jan 1994 as KCS 7005, and sold to Louisiana & Delta in February 1994 as LDRR 7005. (Roster information from atsfrr.net) |

NORMAN OK May 1978 -- Santa Fe FP45 5947 and GP38 3550 roll toward the Lindsay Street crossing from the south with an empty grain train in tow. Very close to this location railroad surveyor Abner Norman made camp and the town is named for him. EMD Built the 5947 as passenger unit 107 in December 1967. It was renumbered 5947 in the general 1969-70 renumbering. In September 1982 it was renumbered 5997. It was rebuilt to an SDFP45 in December 1982. In 1985-1986 it wore SPSF paint but regained Santa Fe paint before Oct. 1 1990. It also wore silver with red warbonnet paint and was renumbered to 5997 and then to 97. It was retired after May 6 1999 and donated to the Age of Steam Railroad Museum in December 1999. (Photo date approximate, roster information from atsfrr.net) |
