Pauls Valley OK April 1981 -- This undated photo shows Santa Fe GP38 3501 as it awaits its crew for switching duties in this south-central Oklahoma community. At one time an alternate north-south Santa Fe line from Newkirk in the north through Cushing, Shawnee, Tecumseh, and Byars rejoining the Oklahoma City main line in Pauls Valley. EMD built the 3501 in June 1970. In April 1985 Santa Fe rebuilt it as GP38u 2301. When Santa Fe and Burlington Northern merged it became BNSF 2190 (Feb 9 1980). THACKERVILLE OK October 1973 -- A fellow railfan (left) watches as Santa Fe GP38 3507 rolls south on its way to the Red River bridge with a Houston-bound grain train. Note U28CG 7900 and RSD15 9807 trailing. EMD built the 3507 (s/n 36543) in June 1970 and delivered it in blue with yellow ends. It was painted yellow warbonnet after Aug 26 1972. In June 1985 it was rebuilt as a GP38u and renumbered 2307. After transfer to BNSF it was patched and renumbered 2197 on Feb 22 2000. DAVIS OK October 1973 -- This undated photo shows Santa Fe GP38 3512 leading a grain train around the curve south of Davis OK. Also in the lashup are a U30CG, a U23B, a GP30 and another GP38. Variety like this made railfanning in the ’70s a lot of fun. EMD built the 3512 in June 1970. In October 1982 Santa Fe rebuilt it into a GP38u and renumbered it ATSF 2312. It made it into SPSF paint but was returned to Santa Fe paint before Jan 1 1991. Upon merger Santa Fe’s merger with the BN it was renumbered to BNSF 2202. The track was very close by a local watering hole and sometimes the crew had to check clearance to parked vehicles before pulling into thre spur. The watering hole was originally the Norman station on the Interurban line. Note the CN unit trailing. |
