EMD built the 5553 (s/n 32529) as ATSF 1853 in November 1966 and delivered it in blue with yellow ends. Sopmetime after Aug 26 1972 it was painted yellow warbonnet. In Feburary 1982 the San Bernardino shops rebuilt it as an SD45u and renumbered it 5323. It was laid up bar order in JUne 1992, retired in February 1993 and sold to Wisconsin Central Rwy in March 1993 as WC 6593 in maroon and yellow paint. HEMAN OK June 18 1979 -- Santa Fe SD45 5605 heads west with train 138. EMD built the 5605 as a Locotrol master (s/n 35010) in May 1969 and delivered it in blue with yellow ends and trim. It was repainted into yellow warbonnet after Aug 26 1972. It became the second unit to be painted in the proposed Southern Pacific-Santa Fe merger scheme in the first week of September 1985 when it was released from the San Bernardino shops as SPSF 5401. It was returned to yellow warbonnet before Jan 1 1991 with the failure of the merger, was retired in April 1995 but transferred to BNSF on Sept 22 1995 after the merger. It was patched BNSF and renumbered 6412 on Sept 19 1999 and was retired in April 1995. It was acquired by National Railway Equipment Co and became NREX 6412. CLOVIS NM Feb 1974 -- Myself and three other railfans were in the Clovis facilities with signed permissions in our pockets signed by the division superintendent courtesy of my mother who was then the executive secretary of the Portales Chamber of Commerce. We had the run of the place. This set of locos was sitting east of the engine facility. In addition to the SD45 are four Locotrol receiver B-units and an RSD15. Multiple antennas on the SD45 indicate it is a Locotrol master unit. The grain in this photo is courtesy of using Ektachrome 400. |
