Description:  ARGENTINE KS May 1975 -- A neat catch! Santa Fe Bicentennial SD45 5702 is all alone as it moves in the direction of the shops. Note missing presidential seal on the round shield. I was with a Santa Fe employee for this on-the-property shot. I believe the loco has just passed under the hump.

Description:  HOLLIDAY KS June 1975 -- Santa Fe U36C 8713 leans into a curve with a mixed freight in tow. Note green signal on right hand rails. We missed a flying meet by about five minutes. According to atsfrr.net this unit was built by General Electric in July 1972. It was rebuilt to U36Cu/SF30C 9502 in September 1985. It was retired in August 1995 and went to National Railway Equipment Co.

Description:  NEWMAN KS Sept 26 1979 -- UP SD40 3104 handles a mixed freight. According to utahrails.net it was built in September 1971 and retired Jan 30 1989. It was then “sold to Wilson Railway Co., Des Moines, Iowa, 6 June 1989, reconditioned and sold to PLM 3104 in August 1989, held at Wilson until mid 1990; rebuilt to SD40-2 by Morrison Knudsen, Mountaintop, Pa., completed as PLM 3104 on 31 August 1990; sold to Morrison Knudsen in April 1993; rebuilt to SD40M-2 by Morrison Knudsen, Boise, Idaho, completed as Morrison Knudsen (MKCX) 9053 on 4 February 1994; sold to Helm Leasing (HLCX) 6300, 26 August 1996; leased to Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana, in service as TFM 1511; returned to Helm, in national lease service as HLCX 6300.”

Description:  EMPORIA KS June 1976 -- Santa Fe SD45-2 5700, resplendent in its bicentennial colors, handles the front end of Super C. EMD built the unit (b/n 72642-14) in April 1973 and delivered it in yellow warbonnet. It was repainted in bicentennial colors in the first half of 1975 and regained yellow warbonnet paint on June 17 1977/ In January 1988 it was rebuilt as SD45-2B 5517 and underwent maintenance at Morrison Knudsen in April 1994. Description:  PARSONS KS April 1977 -- This unusual locomotive was front coupled but a shot was worth it. According to UtahRails.NET (http://utahrails.net/index.php) the unit was “rebuilt in December 1974 from F3A 66C (EMD 4034, June 1947) by MKT at Parsons, Kansas, numbered MKT 399; renumbered to MKT 401B in April 1975 upon entering service. F3A 66C had been wrecked on 17 June 1974 at Caney, Okla … Rebuild included an EMD 2000 horsepower 16 cylinder 645E prime mover and upgraded electrical gear; cab windows were blanked out and a new enlarged nose door installed, making the unit into a cabless booster."

The U28CG class was purchased for passenger service and was delivered in red warbonnet with steam generators. After the Amtrak takeover the units were assigned to freight service, repainted into freight colors and lost the steam generators.

After being renumbered 3038 in late 1969 or the first half of 1970 it gained its yellow bonnet paint after Aug 26 1972. It was rebuilt to a GP20u in November 1977. On Oct. 5 1998 it became BNSF 2026. Albert, D-OK) is shown at Armourdale Yard only months before total shutdown of the Rock. Information from www.thedieselshoop.us indicates that in 1980 the unit became Missouri Pacific 2268. In 1987 it became Union Pacific 2268 and on April 6 2001 it became UP 768. It was retired by UP in June 2008 and became GMTX 2139.

Description:  KANSAS CITY KS Sept. 29 1979 -- The Pride of Armoudale, CRIP 999, poses only months before the Rock Island was to shut down. According to information from donsdepot.donrossgroup.net the unit was SW1 544 and "was built in July 1949, #7480. It was rebuilt at Silvis in January 1978 as slug 999 Pride of Armourdale. It was sold to Chrome Locomotive in February 1981."
